Text of Tom Feeney's Introduction

Hello, I'm Tom Feeney, Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives. I am delighted to introduce you to a new, on-line learning experience: Florida - History, People, and Politics.

Florida - History, People, and Politics is a self-contained, self-paced information and course package, produced by Tallahassee Community College in conjunction with the Florida House of Representatives, designed especially for high school and college-age students, as well as for any person who wishes to learn more about Florida and its historic, cultural, and political heritages.

Florida has a long and richly diverse history, beginning with its indigenous peoples, and continuing with the Spanish, the Africans, and the English and American migrants who came here in the 1500's through the 1800's, and still continues to the present with thousands of people from across the globe who are drawn by the variety of amenities offered by the Sunshine State.

This course is intended to acquaint you with Florida's rich history - you will study the people, and investigate key events and trends in the cultural, social, economic and political fabrics which shaped our past, which certainly influence our present, and which will continue to shape our future.

For more details about the course, please return to the "Home Page" and click on About this Course. We are interested in your opinions and ideas concerning the course. E-mail and phone information can be found in the About this Course section.
