The
Second Spanish Interlude
Although far shorter in duration than
the first occupation of Florida, the Second Spanish Period is by
far the one that has helped shape the image of early Florida. It
was during this period that the sugar cane industry came to prominence
in Florida. Although slaves were used on these sugar plantations,
the Spanish version of slavery offered opportunities to slaves to
work for themselves and even purchase their freedom. This so angered
the British and Americans that border raids and armed confrontations
became more and more violent. During and following the War of 1812,
Americans launched attacks on the Spanish colony, particularly General
Andrew Jackson.
